My Daughter Tiphanie
Well I am sure that you all know that history was made in the Falklands on the 10th & 11th of March when Falkland Islanders voted in a referendum to show the world that we are British and want to remain British. In the picture is my daughter Tiphanie who was fortunate enough to be working at the right place at the right time to help with the organising of the referendum. In the picture she is showing the assembled counters, press and interested on lookers that she has emptied the box of votes and that it is indeed empty. There was never any doubt in my mind what the outcome would be. Our community came out in force to cast their vote. With a staggering 94% turnout which turned into a 99.8% yes vote. The message was clear. Of course we are democratic and 3 individuals chose to say no. They may have been confused, it could have been an error but then again it might not have been. All I can say is if there are 3 individuals who do not wish to remain British and keep our ties with Great Britain then they must feel well and truly out of place living here. It must feel much like trying to fit a square post into a round hole.
I must say, I thought the referendum was very well organised and run despite the world's media and hordes of Observers leaning over the shoulders of officials.
ReplyDeleteYes, it did appear to all run very well.
DeleteJust a shame that ballot box is blocking a view of my wife! :-)
DeleteI do hope you managed to get a photo of your wife at some point during the evening. :-)
DeleteHave you found out who the rebels are yet?
ReplyDeleteNo. I guess we will never know. No shortage of speculation though.
ReplyDeleteI bet! Difficult times for you guys down there. do you think that the Argentinians will try to take the islands by force again?
ReplyDeleteNo, not in the near future anyway. Their purpose in life at the moment seems to be to make ours difficult but we are a resilient bunch and we will get by.
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteFound your blog, we are having an online discussion in the UK about Farming in the Falklands @ www.farmingforum.co.uk........wondered if you might like to contribute....bit short of Islanders on the forum.
George
Hi George,
DeleteMy husband went to the site to have a look but he couldn't get signed in. I will have a try but we are over our megabyte usage for this month so it may have to wait until the beginning of March.
Lindsey
p.s. I had a quick look. We shear in summer. The majority shear between November and the end of February although we do have a few farms that pre lamb shear earlier.
Hi nice to hear from you,
DeleteForum can be a bit picky about allowing people to join, all to do with hackers etc.
Really enjoyed your blog....we were just talking about your Ram sale story yesterday...Goose Green Manager (Instantly recognisable to us here) Farmers are the same the world over.
Whole lamb from our local farmer/ Butcher £130!
Hope to see you on the Forum some time.
George
Hi George,
DeleteGlad you are enjoying the blog. That was the ram sale a year ago. Keith the manager of Goose Green is a good friend of ours so although we were competing against each other for the rams it was good natured. We are just back from the ram sale again this year. I will blog about it after the end of the month when I have plenty of megabytes again. It was difficult last year but competition for them this year was intense. Must check lamb prices in the shops when I am in Stanley.
Dear George,
ReplyDeleteJust a quick note to let you know I'm Argentinian and I support your efforts of self-determination. Besides I don't believe the democratic governments in Argentina have done their homework to make anybody enthused in being part of a country lead by a corrupted system. Sadly, they will use the islands theme to distract the Argentines of deeper economic problems. Some day things will change in Argentina (in a democratic environment) and I look forward for a friendly and productive relationship with your people in the islands. I believe many Argentines have this opinion though they would not be willing to make it public for fear.
Kind regards,
M
Thank you for your kind reply and your support for our right to self determination.
